History of the Institute of Communication Studies

1972Establishment of a teaching and research unit for communication studies at the Universities of Stuttgart/Stuttgart-Hohenheim.

Introduction of the Postgraduate Diploma Course in Journalism Studies;

Initiated by Prof. Dr. Manfred Rühl und Prof. Dr. Gerhard Maletzke.

1984Establishment of two professorships, one of which is provided with funding by the Southern German Broadcasting
1985Prof. Dr. Michael Schenk becomes Chair of the Department of Social Research within the Institute of Communication Studies.
1988Prof. Dr. Claudia Mast becomes Chair of the Deparment of Journalism within the Institute of Communication Studies.
1992Relocation to the cavaliers' quarters and further development of the Postgraduate Diploma Course in Journalism Studies.
1993Foundation of the Research Centre for Media Economics and Communication Research by Prof. Dr. Michael Schenk.
1995

Introduction of the Diploma Course in Communication Studies with joint support from the Universities of Hohenheim and Stuttgart.

In the winter semester 1995/96 thirty highly qualified students commence their Diploma Studies in Communication Studies. Already at the beginning the university's internal numerus clausus (numerical restriction on admission) is 1.3.

2001Prof. Dr. Barbara Pfetsch accepts the offer of a newly established professorship and becomes Chair of the Department of Media Politics within the Institute of Communication Studies.
2006Prof. Dr. Frank Brettschneider is offered the fourth professorship and becomes Chair of the Department of Media Politics within the Insitute of Communication Studies.
As of WiSe 2006/07

Introduction of the Bachelor's degree program in Communication Studies;

Record number of applicants: 1.283 applicants for 74 vacancies.

The Diploma Course in Communication Studies is replaced by the new Bachelor's degree.

2009Prof. Dr. Thorsten Quandt becomes Chair of the Department of Interactive Media and Online Communication within the Institute of Communication Studies. 
As of WiSe 2009/10Introduction of the Master's degrees in Communication Management as well as Empirical Communication Research.
2010

Prof. Dr. Bertram Scheufele takes over the Chair of the Department of Media Politics after Dr. Barbara Pfetsch accepts an offer from Freie Universität Berlin.

The Institute of Communication Studies is established with its independent structure in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Science of the University of Hohenheim.

WiSe 2011/12Reform of the Bachelor's degree program in Communication Studies and successful accreditation by AQAS (The Agency for Quality Assurance through Accreditation of Study Programs).
2012

Prof. Sabine Trepte becomes Chair of the Department of Media Psychology within the Institute of Communication Studies.

The Institute of Communication Studies now comprises six professorships.

2013Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schweiger takes over the Chair of the Department of Interactive Media and Online Communication after Prof. Dr. Quandt accepts an offer from the University of Münster.
WiSe 2014/15

Reform of the Master's degree programs in Communication Management as well as Communication and Media Research (formerly Empirical Communication Research) and successful accreditation by AQAS.

2015

Within the Institute of Communication Studies, the denomination of Department 540A is changed from "Social Research" to "Media Research and Media Use".

Prof. Dr. Jens Vogelgesang takes over the Chair of the Department of Media Research. 

2019Combination of the two Master's degree programs into the joint Master's degree in Communication Management and Analysis.
